Releasing hip flexor in developpe a la seconde?

In a floor barre class I took this weekend (which was excellent), we were doing developpe's lying on the floor. When we did the a la seconde (lying on our sides), the instructor came over and helped me release the tension in the hip flexor on my working side, which let my leg move up about two feet. That is my REAL side extension, I guess. I get there in grand battements or when I hold my leg and let go, and I USED to be able to developpe up there, but lately I think maybe those hip flexors have been getting in my way. Any advice on how to avoid gripping the hip flexors in developpe? I would love to see my nice high side extensions again....
