Hi, Janey, and welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers. :devil:


Since you're a new dancer, I think that it would be best for you to do the stretches given in class, and those alone, until you have learned enough about them to be able to do them without supervision. Stretching is not something you can simply improvise, like by putting your foot on top of the wardrobe and leaning into it. Come to think of it, that sounds just horrid; forget I mentioned it.


But really, the safe things to do are just the passive stretches, where you are relaxed and only letting gravity do the work. Just standing with your head down can be a great stretch of your neck, back, and the backs of your legs. Sort of a "lazy cambré".
