Animefleur
why is the company called LeS GrandS BalletS--plural? Grammatically it doesn't make sense to me why one dance company would be known in the plural sense but then I'm not a native French speaker. Does anyone know? Also, anyone know why there was a name change--at the beginning of the company in 1956 (50th anniversary year! Woohoo!) it was called les Ballets Chiriaeff. I'm guessing that was probably the founding director? Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Probably for the same reason that the Diaghilev company was the Ballets Russes. It's a matter of the choice of what the noun means. Does it mean the art or the company itself, or does it mean the collection of repertoire? If the former then it should be singular. If the latter, then plural. And yes, Ludmilla Chiriaeff was the founding director. Quote Link to comment
