At my old studio, which was balanchine based, when arms were en evant, your hands were level with your sternum. At my new studio, which is vaganova and checcetti based, the hands are level with your belly button. Is this a style thing determined by the teacher and method, or is one way right and the other wrong?

Both usages of 1st position are currently being seen in repertoire. There is no right or wrong actually accept if you are the teacher who is requesting and teaching what to do. Listen and watch carefully always for how, why and when various arms are being used. For Balanchine ballets the arms are indeed higher than in Petipa works. :o
