pirouettes! HELP!

I am having some trouble with my pirohuettes. I am okay with my ballet ones, but my jazz turns are a mess. Whenever I turn, I have trouble controlling it to stop when I want to, even after just doing a single. I try to have my placement correct with my front foot on the floor firmly, and when I go into the turn, I feel like I have to use my arms to get myself around. Also, I try to bring my leg up to passe as high as I can but when I go into releve while in my turn I feel like i'm falling over. I need to perfect my doubles!

Also, in ballet, when I do pirouhettes, when I try to do a triple (usually my double is okay, but sometimes it can be messy), I feel like I don't have enough energy or speed to carry my passe around, and I end up hopping at the end, it looks very messy and I should have it by now.

Please help!!!

I don't teach jazz, but, a pirouette is a pirouette. Just work on them the same way you would a regular en dehors pirouette, which is establish the placement of the preparation, work on the relevé to the position until you find you center of balance, and then take it around the corner, holding the up at the end. When that is accomplished, take it further around the corner until it is a pirouette. When that is accomplished, add a bit more push from the legs and turning power from the torso and stay up longer. Voila, a double :shhh:

knock knock - I hope you dont mind me adding - thank you Ms. Leigh for describing the process of learning a pirouette so clearly and straightforwardly (for the rest of us).

Jim.

Added later in response to WendyMichelle's posting below: I dont think it makes it sound easy, but it makes the basic task to be mastered CLEAR, and tells me at least where I should be focussing my attention.

I cannot believe I'm giving this away, but heres the trick!

I learned this from a Jazz teacher this summer, who learned it from Nick Lazarinni "The guy who won So you think you can dance 2005." Hopefully I spelled his name right...

For pirouttes, stand in second position turned out. Slight plie, and raise one foot to releve. Do this about sixteen times, and do the other. Then do both feet at the same time 16 times. Then releve and hold for 16. Do this till your calves hurt.

That will help with pirouttes, however, balancing...

Stand in sixth position, turned in. Pull your foot into coupe turned in. Releving your opposite foot, and develope the foot in coupe. Then back in and repeat...

This will help you get more of a mentalty of turning in. Also when you get used to that try it in passe.

After all this, practice, practice, practice... Going from Ballet to Jazz is definitely hard.

Good luck! =)

How can you do both feet at the same time? You'd either fall down or be jumping.

This is relevé. If I understand the exercise correctly, the foot not in relevé is in a low degagé position, and when both feet relevé, they both stay on the floor.

I thinkt he meant to do left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot and so on inspite of right six times and then left six times...

I'm not sure of the overall efficacy of the exercise, but it might be good for pirouettes à la seconde.

My friend is really good at turning and she like does like 4 or 5 turns on pointe!!!! It's crazy! and I can't even seem to do more than 2.... Like my teacher says that my doubles are good...but I'm just not feeling it.... How do I stop my jealousy and fix my turns????? :)

Jealousy is wasted energy. Accomplishes nothing. Put your energy into your own work and don't worry about what someone else is doing. If you can learn by watching fine, but everyone has their strengths and their weaknesses, and admiring your friend's strength would be a much more positive thing to do. Hopefully others will be admiring your quality turns just as much as her quantity turns.
