Guest afroballet01
I can only do one class a week to start this year because I don't know how well my ankle will hold up going back to dance after a year of recovering from an injury...I thought that I had decided, but I keep going back and forth on my decisions..First I said I was gonna do ballet, then it was jazz, then modern, and now I'm back to ballet. You see, since I can only take one class a week right now,I don't want to make a decision that I'll regret.I love ballet and all,but after a year out,I'm now back at the beginner level. My technique has totally gone out the window and my strength is lacking..So I was thinking that I would try jazz again,or try something new like modern, but I really love ballet, and I think I'd miss it.What would you do?What do you think I should do?Thanks. Mel Johnson
Follow your heart. If you love ballet, then take that. Link to comment
Pirouette30808
Hmmm... after a year of recovering from an ankle injury, you should be completely healed already right? But, anyways back to the original topic. I think you should take ballet, that's what I would do if I was in your situation . You say that you don't want to make a decision you will regret since you can only take class once a week, and you also say that you really love ballet and that you would miss it if you didn't take it. You never said that you would miss jazz or modern if you didn't take it. Therefore, the only logical solution would be to take ballet because you would miss it if you didn't take it and you wouldn't have any regret because you love it. You say that you can only take one class a week to start this year, so I'm assuming you can add classes when you feel confident about your ankle. So when you're ready you could always add a modern or jazz class (or even another ballet class! ) in the middle of the year. The only way you could ever regain your technique and strength again would be to take class again. It doesn't matter that you would be at the beginner level, your body needs time to re-learn the steps and adjust to class again. Plus I don't think you have anything to worry about coming back into class, that's when the muscle memory kicks in! Also, I agree with Mr. Johnson. Whenever you can't decide something, always follow your heart . Everyone may give you advice for your problems but at the end of the day when it really comes down to it, you're the one left with the problem and you're the one who has to make the final decision. Only you know what's right for you. Therefore, follow your heart, it'll guide you in the right direction tell you what you need to do. Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted September 3, 2006 Administrators Report Share Posted September 3, 2006 Are you only taking one class a week because of the ankle? I really think you should start back in ballet with a minimum of two classes a week. Preferably more. It's better to start slowly by only doing barre at first, and if the ankle is good, add the first part of center but no jumps. When you are sure it is good, add the jumps, but small, two foot jumps first. More classes, but going slowly and carefully would be much better. It will take forever to get your strength and technique back in one class a week. Link to comment
Guest afroballet01
Pirouette - One would think that my ankle would be totally fine after a year, but a long story made short is that they didn't figure out what was really wrong until about 5 months after the initial injury. Ms Leigh. - Yes,I am only doing one class a week because of my ankle. If my ankle is doing well after awhile,I can add another class.More than 2 a week is doubtful because I'm involved in choir and clubs at school, plus my family can't afford all that. shulie
I am so sorry to hear you still have problems with your ankle- after a sprain it sometimes takes forever to completely regain strength and control- my sister used to mess with it for years! Maybe try to start carefully with 2 classes ballet a week- not too expensive and not too strenous yet good for strengthening- not to mention it is fun! Link to comment
Guest afroballet01
Even if my doctor and parents would allow me to do 2 classes,I don't know if I'd be able to since I'm sure my parents would make me pay for one of them.My family doesn't have as much money as we used to,and my parents don't support me dancing anyway. Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted September 3, 2006 Administrators Report Share Posted September 3, 2006 Afroballet, I think we have discussed this before with you, and I'm sure we made lots of suggestions about ways to finance your classes. We talked about things like helping out at the studio in exchange for classes, babysitting, housecleaning, helping out at home in exchange for more allowance, which could pay for another class, etc. The consenus here is that a minimum of 2 classes in ballet technique a week are necessary to accomplish anything. One is just simply not good enough. And even coming back from injury, you will be better off with 2 instead of 1, even if you can't yet do the whole class. I suggest you find a way to do it, or please don't ask for our help. It has been given and you keep coming up with excuses not to accept it. Topic closed. Link to comment
