I was just wondering what the difference is between canvas and leather slippers?

whats best to use?

And a last, maybe dumb question :blushing: . When do you use satin slippers? Is it just for performances, or can you use them for normal training too?

I dont know what I would have done whithout this great board

As far as my feet can tell, there's no difference between canvas and leather shoes. And satin shoes, while nice for performance, will be obtrusive if everybody in your group isn't wearing them. You can use them for class, but they won't last as long.

I found that when I use canvas, I don't stick so much to the floor. And the shoes really enhance my arch. The thing I like about leather is that they last, and they don't get dirty! But that is me...

Yes, leather will usually last a bit longer, but canvas are easier to break in, make your feet look better (especially split sole), and they can be washed.

Can canvas be washed in the washing machine or does it need to be handwashed? If it can be washed in the washing machine, does it need to be gentle? Can you dry them in a dryer or do they need to air dry?

Washing machine is okay, gentle, cold water, no dryer.

What I've heard is for canvas you can wash them in the washer on gentle then let them sit out flat and when they're sorta dry and barely damp, you wear them around the house until they're dry. So they can fit to your feet better :) And canvas breathes better. I just started and I bougth canvas and I really like them!

They change in the same way that leather does - they stretch, only they stretch faster than leather.

Funny how you said to wear them around the house until they're dry. Once I washed my canvas shoes, my only pair, and I didn't have any other shoes to wear. They stayed damp for a week! I ended up PERFORMING in wet (ok, damp) shoes! A yucky sensation...

Sewing elastics onto canvas slipper is so much easier than sewing elastics on leather ones! DD can sew her own canvas slippers but I have to do the leather slipper she sometimes needs for performances.

Leather occasionally gets kind of noisy during turns, a problem I have never noticed with a classmate wearing canvas. Currently I'm wearing non-leather-sole canvas shoes from Grishko and they aren't squeaky either.

Leather can be a lot stickier but they last longer. Leather is loud too! my studio requires leather (i prefer canvas) and turning is so loud from the sticking to the floor. On the other hand the leather makes you work harder to get turns so i guess thats good

I don't allow any but our most senior students to wear canvas shoes. In my opinion they don't give enough support to the foot and they don't encourage the young dancer to use the intrinsic foot muscles in order to develop the arch. Additionally, they wear out much quicker.

Since I've become a senior student I prefer canvas because they let your foot breathe more, and are more comfortable. Also I think they're much better looking than leather.

Leather also tend to squeak while doing turns when you put rosin on them, or if you're dancing on marley.

Canvas do wear out faster but they also cost a bit less than leather so it usually evens out.

But then again it's been a while since I've used leather, so I can't quite remember how they feel. But when they wear out and get holes they feel worse than worn out canvas.
