Alysse
Hey everyone! i was just thinkging and drawing conclusions that when you look at the dancers from abt's bios there are many that have won gold medals at ballet competiions and have gotten high rankings. it is necessary to have competition and winning experience under your belt for a ballet company like ABT to accept you? thanks! Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted September 21, 2006 Administrators Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 There are many, many dancers working in professional companies who were not competition winners, or even ever entered competitions. ABT does seem to have a few of them, perhaps more than most companies, however, that is not the one and only criteria for getting into a company, even ABT. Link to comment
Guest Knight
Most of the professionals at ABT have been there for a really long time as well. Getting into ABT is one thing, but getting into the higher ups. Takes time. Competitions are generally good money generators. As some competitions can win you several thousand dollars. There is one in Mississippi every January that has a pot of like $10,000 I believe. Atlease close to it... You can imagen who all shows up to these as well. Link to comment
Alysse
Thanks both of you for your info. Knight, do many professional daners show up as well? What is another competiions besides YAGP that is good to look into for a 15 year old? (if you know of any) Thanks again! ----------Removed unnecessary quote. Momof3darlings
Alysse--there are competitions where professional dancers compete as well as students such as IBC in Jackson, Mississippi which I believe Knight might be referring to. However, there are also competitions that only students can compete such as YAGP, American Ballet Competition, Russian Pointe, National Arts and Letters, etc. As Ms. Leigh has stated there are many professional dancers who have not won competitions. As well, many that have won them after they were already in a company. Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted September 22, 2006 Administrators Report Share Posted September 22, 2006 Knight, can you tell us a bit more about the competition in Mississippi? I have not heard of anything there except the IBC in Jackson every 4 years, which is a professional competition. Please be careful about stating things like money prizes as facts, unless you know that for sure and it is published. Otherwise, it is just something you heard somewhere and we don't know if that is true or not. Link to comment
