when i do my forte turns i tend to hop a lot when i get back to the front. i know that is the only thing really keeping me from having more technically correct forte turns. What excercises can i do besides heel raises to strengthen my calves so i will have the strength to raise up and not feel the urge to hop

Yes, Tasha, I think that's what's meant here.

The first things I have to know are whether you recognize the terms "relevé", "plié", and "pirouette".

I have this problem too even though I can do the 32 relevés en pointe. I usually hop forward by accident and crash into the mirror.

Deep pliés in fouettes usually help keep me from hopping.

I also have a hopping problem, but I tend to travel forward and towards my working leg every time I releve. I think I'm not staying over my supporting leg so I have to hop to get my supporting leg under me again.

Kids, I know that you want to be helpful, but remember, we're dealing with a poster here who may not understand the French terminology. Fouettés are a trick anyway. Those old cancan dancers in 1870 Paris could do them, and in heeled shoes. They may have been many things, but real trained dancers they were not.

Hold your back and don't pull off the supporting leg.

Babyv, welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers.

I hope that you will enjoy your time with us, but I would request that you look over the Rules and Policies section of the board, available by clicking a link on the title banner of the main pages. In Young Dancers, we would prefer that Ms. Leigh and I give the advice, but supporting anecdotes are welcome after we take a crack at it. At the moment, we're still waiting to find out if unencouragedDANCER is familiar with French terminology, which is critical to our being able to give proper advice.
