Fostering "Artistry" in a young dancer

OK, this may be a maturity thing but here is my question. Technique-wise my 12yo DD is doing fine (although her legs are growing SO fast she looks like a little colt prancing around), performance-wise she has gotten a little shy and needs to open up and connect with her audience a little more. Is this something you just have to wait for as she grows, or is there a way to help her break out a bit?

Hopefully I have made sense, thanks for your input!

Kate, this is quite normal at this age. It often takes quite a while for them to grow out of that. There are some children who do not go through it, but in my experience most do.
