Television: ballet in prime time t.v

Recommended Posts

It may not have been a full length ballet but during the commercial break between Ugly Betty ( 8pst/7 central) and Grey's Anatomy (9pst/8 central) yesterday (Thursday Oct. 18 ) , there was a commercial featuring a ballerina talking about the helpfulness of the I-phone to her website the winger. com .

I was so happy that I knew both the company they were talking about and the website . It's nice to see ballet is getting into everyone’s eye in more than a Burger King commercial despite how hilarious that was. Hopefully , one day the U.S. will catch up to England and Canada with there own series about ballet in prime time... though I'm sure there may be one that already exists with the right cable package.

One day I hope to not have to rely on PBS for all my ballet watching needs.

My dd and I saw it as well. She thought it was real cool. A true realization of a professional ballet dancer and her career. Of course she now desperatly wants an i phone. I hope this is the beginning of more ballet on TV too. PBS could show more as well.

I was in the other room when I heard the commercial also. I had to run back and rewind to make sure I heard right and they said something about ballet on tv (thank God for tivo). Who is the dancer though?

At least you have PBS. The programming varies from one local PBS channel to another. We NEVER have ballet programming where I live on PBS.

I saw the commercial tonight in SF (watching the Sox whooping Cleveland:) Pretty cool. Her dad , Gary Sloan, is the photographer for the company I used to dance with (she was a student there before going to New York). He makes beautiful dance photographs.

The best bet for ballet on TV seems to be bits on "classic arts showcase" on PBS stations...waaay late at night. I was psyched to see Wendy Whelan on TV one night this summer, when I was stuck in a hotel in Santa Fe with nothing to do.

If you guys haven't already been to The Winger, I highly recommend it! I've been reading for about the last 4 or 5 months and I adore it! It's a very good insight to the professional ballet/dance world.

It is a very interesting site, with lots of great photos and contributors from many ballet companies around the country.

Breakfast with the Arts on Sunday mornings used to contain some ballet fare from time to time. But, now it would be better labeled as Breakfast with the Rock Stars, as it seems to consistently feature musicians of some sort and rarely of the classical variety. The term 'arts' is used pretty loosely in this context... I believe the show was cancelled in June.

I was glad to see that Oklahoma University (my alma mater) is once again this season airing the ad they started running last year during network coverage of their football games that features a fully suited football player holding a ballet dancer in a classical tutu and pose, with the tag line: Oklahoma University - We've got it all!

There must be something in the air. The University of South Florida features their Dance Department on the University ads that run during halftime of their televised games also. I can't remember the slogan but it was along the same lines as that of Oklahoma's.
