SugarPlumFairy1
I have hyperextended knees and when I sousou en pointe my knees are bent, I try to streighten them but, they wont streighten. My teacher tells me to overcross my feet, I tried that but, my knees still did not streighten. I am getting really frustrated with it, please help! Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted October 24, 2007 Administrators Report Share Posted October 24, 2007 SPF1, if your knees are hyperextended they are usually over straight, or past straight, in weight bearing positions. If they are hyperextended, and still bent, then you must be tilting your pelvis and probably smashing the feet too close together. Check your alignment, and then definitely really cross the fifth, but don't get the feet too close together. The knees must be straight in that position. Quote Link to comment

jessi489
I have the same problem! I have very hyper extended knees, so it's quite hard to have straight knees. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted October 31, 2007 Administrators Report Share Posted October 31, 2007 No, actually hyperextended knees are not hard to straighten. HypOextended knees are the ones that do not straighten. HypERextended is normally pushing back past straight. Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
In fact, the tricky part with hypERextended students is to get the legs to STOP at straight! Quote Link to comment
jessi489
I'm sorry, I meant hard to straighten in sousou. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted October 31, 2007 Administrators Report Share Posted October 31, 2007 Then the same answer I gave above, in the 2nd post of the thread, would apply, jessi. Quote Link to comment
carlyxnichole
I too have hyper extended knees and it is hard to make my knees stop at straight, is there a way to train my knees to just stop a straight on their own? It is really frustrating to always be thinking about them when I could be thinking about other things that I am doing, like my arms. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted December 12, 2007 Administrators Report Share Posted December 12, 2007 Hello carlyxnichole, welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers Controlling hyperextension is mostly about alignment and weight placement, and being sure to use the quad muscles to help resist pushing the knees back. When this becomes habit, then you won't have to think about it all the time. A habit it developed from constant practice, but it does take time. It is not an easy fix, but definitely possible. carlyxnichole
Alright, well the only thing I can do is try it. Thank you very much and I will get back to you if I really start seeing a change. Quote Link to comment
