November Wine Couch

Ok, I haven't posted much recently because I've been crazy-busy, but I had to start this topic.

The past two days I've been having an attack of gout in the joint of my big toe.

Now that may sound kind of funny--I always pictured "gouty" types as fat, gluttonous old men (the Diamond Jim Brady types) and never thought it was that serious. Heh. It's been some of the most EXCRUCIATING pain I've ever felt! :firedevil:

Hubby took me to the emergency room this afternoon because I was sure I had broken a bone or two. I just couldn't figure how on earth I'd done it. I simply woke up in the middle of the night Thursday in screaming pain. The doc told me that's typical of gout. Now I have meds, and I should be okay soon. I'm a little nervous because bedtime is approaching, and the acute pain usually comes at night (reminds me of a line from "Aliens": "They mostly come at night. Mostly." :speechless: )

I'm not sure whether to be relieved or really worried. If nothing's broken, then I should be able to continue taking pointe (after doctor approval, of course.) But after I read the info on www.gout.com I got a little scared, because it can become a chronic condition with some serious side effects.

So that's my wine--er, whine. (Wine can be a trigger for gout.) It's time for some serious self-care, I'd say. :crying:

My "whine" of the day - I've caught the nasty cold from somewhere. Most suspicious culprit is apparently the aircon system at work.

Bah....

Ah, but the good news is that you'll never catch THAT particular cold again!! One virus down, fifty thousand to go!

Seriously, sorry that you're feeling bad. Time for chicken soup and tea! Hope you feel better soon.

Spingirl, I am not a doctor and I've never had gout, so I'm not advocating anything. However, I just heard all about Ayurvedic remedies for gout on this tv show and if I had gout I'd probably ask my doctor if it would be all right to try them. Unfortunately, I just checked their website and it is not yet fully operational, so the recipes they featured to counteract gout aren't up there. You might try checking it in a week or so, though:

We have a performance and need new costumes for it. I offered my teacher to work a bit on them but months ago when I still had so vacation. Now the performance is going to be in a month and yesterday in class she came up with a whole lot of fabric and asked me if I could do five (!!) long clothes (looks like evenging gown). I have Uni, I have work and stupid me said yes, I will manage this... My machine to sew the whole stuff has gone crazy and is at the mechanic at the moment...he will try to fix it sometimes next week.

All this happened before class and as you can imagine I could not really concentrate and was thinking the whole time about patterns and fabrics and when I will do this.

I just hope that I don't join the group of sick people here! Wish you all that you get well soon!

Thanks for the info--I would try just about anything at this point! All the information I've gotten has been along the "lose weight and watch what you eat" line. I'm working on the weight, and I've not been eating the suspected culprits, so I'm not sure what caused this. Maybe another culture has a different outlook on prevention and cure.

It is getting better, but I'm really antsy to get back to class. Especially since I've been going through some back issues of "Pointe" magazine. I wanna get up, put on the pointe shoes, and dance!! Well, actually the thought of trying to stick this foot into a pointe shoe isn't all that exciting. But you know what I mean!

My whine is that it feels like nothing is getting any better. If things are improving, it is happening in such incrementally small amounts that it feels imperceptible. This is normal, I hope.

My complaint is not just for this month but anyway...I can't find anyone/thing with which to perform! I moved to a bigger city, a much bigger city than where I had been living and assumed that performance opportunities would abound as they did in the small city where I was living. Well I was completely wrong, and I sympathize with all of you who have in the past said you would love to perform but can't find a venue. Why is there such a void for adults performing if they are not professionals? Its really not fair, of course life isn't fair, blah blah blah.... :cool2:

There are plays/musicals some of which require dancing so I might try one of those but I really want to dance more than those will allow...

Throat infection has me seriously exhausted and off balance. 1 week till concert or I wouldn't even bother with going to class, but my teachers have been understanding, though I feel bad for the other girls as I'm only able to mark the dances at the moment I'm still too run down to dance full on.

My Whine for the day:

I was taking a great class the other day, hitting all the steps correctly, all warmed up.

In grande allegro, I typically dance with other people who take big steps and move across the floor quickly (typically the guys). Little did I know a dancer with less skills and coordination jumped in behind me after we started. When I did the tour jete, I kicked the dancer ( this could have been much much worse)

In the past I have asked this dancer not to dance behind me to no effect. Teacher insists I perform the tour jete correctly and face forward. I have spoken to the teacher about this, He suggested I dance alone or with other dancers of my height/caliber.

Grrr, that IS annoying! Do you think your class mate will learn having been kicked? Of course, the problem is, that kicking or bumping into another dancer can injure YOU as much as the person not watching out. The teacher should intervene.

IMO, teachers should ALWAYS intervene -- even in adult classes -- in matters of spacing.

Though the teacher's advice to go with a group of similar level/ability is good. And being constantly aware of the space (and bodies) around you is very necessary in corps work:) Even pros bite the dust and kick each other from time to time:)

My whine is about my shoes. I've had terrible problems lately with my lower calves cramping up in class. Kinda scary, because it's really low (right near the achilles). And I never had calf/achilles problems before. I did some experimenting with my everyday footwear and concluded that the culprit is my super-cute new brown ballerina flats. Grrr....Guess that my ugly brown Merrells are my only footwear option for now. I'll have to shop for some more attractive functional shoes, I guess. I wear jeans to work (I'm a web/media geek), but feel more professional in the pretty flats.

lampwick, have you tried heel supports in your flats? Flats are totally hard on achilles/calves, basically meaning that they are stretched/unsupported all the time. When I was visiting the physio for my tendonitis years ago, she had me buy these heel cushion things from a sports store (they are made for running/trekking) and put them in the heels of my shoes. A huge difference!

My gripe is that life is crazy and I have no time to sleep/cook properly let alone make it to more dance classes or even just to the gym. :) My post-dissertation body is not moving at all. :(:( I think it's worse because it's approaching end of term and there are so many things to finish marking, etc. I'm tired!
