Laschwen
I put on a pair of pantyhose today for the first time in a while. They turned out to be hipster/low rise. That was an accident. My experience with them today leaves me with a huge questions about their sister low rise tights. Do they stay up on those of you who wear them? How exactly? Is there a new type of waistband? I had to put a pair of tummy control shorts on over them to go to Church today. These pantyhose I got rolled at the "waist" band, which made me think they were too tight, but then they sagged as well. Now, if they sag, wouldn't one think they are not tight enough? I don't quite understand. This is such a far cry from my teen years. In those days I got pantyhose a size or two larg on order to get enough length for my legs, and then had to make sure they were control top or they would fall down. Regular ones were also so big I could pull them up over my breasts. The same went for tights, but the leo would hold them up. Laschwen Quote Link to comment
rshevin
I think low rise tights are for crazy folk. I've always wanted my tights to come up over my rib cages to prevent lumps and bumps. I too have no idea how they can possibly stay up. Quote Link to comment
insidesoloist
The ones I tried stayed on by being so tight they created a "roll" in what was an otherwise flat stomach! Really, the elastic was that strong. I don't recall them budging. But they weren't flattering, either. I think they're great for those with absolutely no fat and boyish hips. They seem to create weird lines on those of us with more standard hourglass shapes. Quote Link to comment
ineluctability
I don't understand low rise tights/hose at all. I, too, tried them and BLECH! So did not work for me. I do, however, have a few pairs of NO WAISTBAND tights from Target. I got them last year, Merona brand, and I ADORE them. They are so nice. But, they aren't making them this year from what I have seen. It's like the tights are made all the way up to the chest, then folded down inside and sewn together. It's almost like you have a pair of booty shorts on they way they are doubled up. They are nice and lightweight and not restricting. I always buy a few sizes up in tights so they aren't all restrictive. I hate control top. I just hate it. We don't get along. Sorry for my ramble!! Quote Link to comment
Agnes1022
My low-rise pink tights work well with the black leos with equally low-cut backs. Otherwise, the line they create show through my light-colored leos. Quote Link to comment
dancingjet
I like my low rise tights. Different stroke for different folks, I guess. Quote Link to comment

Laschwen I'm having this really hilarious mental picture >>giggle, snort<< Sorry, L. Everytime I read your post I start laughing again. Wasn't there some troupe that used to perform on the Carol Burnett Show years ago that had whole-body tights? >>snort, snort<< Ok, I'm under control again. Or is that "control top"? Hee hee hee. (note to self: don't post after participating in cocktail hour.) Well, it could be worse. I remember wearing a too-small pair of pantyhose years ago, and having to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes during church to pull them up. The crotch kept sliding down around my knees. Fortunately my skirt hid it, but I couldn't walk. Oh my gosh, I'm off again!! >>giggle, snort<< Lisa Quote Link to comment
Laschwen
Lisa, You are such a hoot. You also bring memories of middleschool screamng back with that running to the bathroom to pull hose up. Been there... from about the age of 12 until I found the control tops. Lost of girls had tights rolled down to their waists in Modern class in those days. We weren't far from whole body tights.... Here is another giggle for you. I just had a memory of having to wear a...get ready... "panty - girdle" on top of pantyhose to keep them up. I had a tiny (for my height)27 - 28 inch waist and even I was stunned I could get a girdle of any kind in my size? Of course I see what we call shapewear in size small now and it makes sense for the no line or dent look we all like. As to the low rise tights. I understand now why they are made with that comment about very low cut leo backs. I guess I have seen them on Jazz types with those booty shorts and tummy out I prefer to avoid. I have also seen the rolls they create on otherwise skinny girls. Laschwen Quote Link to comment
rshevin
"I just had a memory of having to wear a...get ready... "panty - girdle" on top of pantyhose to keep them up. " Doesn't everyone do that??? My mom had me doing that with tights and underwear from the time I was a really little kid. Not that it has anything to do with ballet. I agree that low rise tights are directly linked to low back leotards but seeing as I won't be seen in public without a bra, the latter are of no more use to me than the former. Quote Link to comment
spingirl
Well, I'd rather see tights peeking out the top of a low-backed leo than panties peeking out from the legs! I see that a lot in the teen classes I take--makes me think that there should be a little pamphlet passed out to new students about appropriate attire, one directed at boys, and one at girls. Could save some embarrassment for both sexes (and fellow students and teachers.) Sorry, this got totally off-topic... Lisa Quote Link to comment
olddude
--makes me think that there should be a little pamphlet passed out to new students about appropriate attire, one directed at boys, and one at girls. ... Ahem ... some of us began well past the age of being boys, or girls. We needed this pamphlet as well. Have you any idea how much weird stuff you run across when searching the internet for men's ballet clothing? You quickly conclude that only a small proportion of it is actually worn by dancers! Eventually the search led me to this site, so it was not entirely a waste - but it was a pretty creepy experience for a nervous newbie. Quote Link to comment
insidesoloist
Okay, wait. First of all, what on earth is a panty girdle? I will be conducting my own internet search, I guess... Second, I also prefer tights peeking out from under a low-backed leo to underwear lining the upper thighs. And olddude, that is so true! And it's especially unfortunate where boys/men are concerned. I just saw a Nutcracker in which one man was really exposed under his white tights. I asked my friend who was in the same performance and he told me that the man was wearing a "dance belt". Well, perhaps he was, but it wasn't the effective kind, IMO. It left extremely little to the imagination. If schools nipped this in the bud by recommending appropriate dancewear to gentlemen, it would be nice. Quote Link to comment
Agnes1022
I am appalled equally by show-through panties and show-through tights. My solution? Coordinate the undies with the leo. For high-cut legs, use thongs. For low-cut backs, use low-rise tights. Too lazy to figure out which, wear thongs and low-rise tights. Quote Link to comment
insidesoloist
If you mean coordinate the leg openings of the leo and underwear, I agree. If you mean coordinate the color, I actually would prefer if people wear skin-tone underwear. It's far less distracting than black underwear shaded over with pink tights so it's not-quite-black, peeking out from under a black leo. And wow, the world of panty girdles is really wide-ranging! rshevin
insidesoloist, I'm afraid you too will run across some rather, er, interesting websites searching for a panty girdle. Basically it's a "granny style" brief with lots of lycra designed to suck in the lower tummy. I can't believe you've never had one! My mom gave me my first one when I was maybe in junior high/upper elementary school? Hum, that could explain some body image issues couldn't it. Anyway. I also think if you choose to wear undies, they should be in the skin tone to tights-pink range. And also, never think you can just tuck the undies up under the leotard. Tights totally preclude this idea (which is apparently common in gymnastics). Quote Link to comment
