Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted January 16, 2008 Administrators Report Share Posted January 16, 2008 Hello balletxteme, welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers Congratulations on getting into SAB. It is not that easy to get accepted there, so I would think that if you are accepted, then they think that you have the technique to be there. Being nervous about going away from home for the first time is normal, but I would not worry about where you are in the levels of the school. You are there to learn and improve, not to show off, so being at the top of the class is not an essential. As for information from people who have attended SAB, please go to the SI forums and find 2007-2008 Summer Intensives. The threads are in alphabetical order. Quote Link to comment
balletxtreme
Thank you! Also, everybody says that if i get accepted, then i m good enough, but what if i looked good doing the simple stuff in the audition but cant do the hard thing? Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Then, if you are accepted, you are placed in a level appropriate to your skill and strength. If you go ANYWHERE, be it SAB, or the Royal Ballet School, or the Moon (only one-sixth gravity there, great for beats!), and you find dancers better than you are, figure out what makes them better and do that. That's one of the ways ballet is learned. Quote Link to comment

hittgace
How was the audition for SAB? I have one Saturday.. Dont worry about the audition to much. It was actually fun! you willl do great, i am sure! kay mazzo was the teacher for mine and she was fairly nice. at first she gave us this really tough lecture about the importance of musicality so make sure you are on the counts she says. i was really nervous before hand, i thought i was going to die of nervousness and i wouldnt make it out in one piece, but that was NOT the case. it was fairly simple and not hardly as bad as i thought. they are simple combinations and simple steps, just use your plie, listen to the music, and BE YOURSELF. because thats who they want to see. they want to see if you can move. they will focus on the balanchine technique later when they can train you. dont watch what any one else in the room is doing and dont compare yourself to them. just focus and do the best you can do. you will be great!!!!! good luck and tell me how it goes!!!!!!!! and plus at the end you get a free pointe shoe bag!!! phoenome
Congrats about getting into SAB!!!!!! What an accomplishment!!!! even though i have never been to this but i have heard it is really hard to get into. I think that if you got into this, the teachers see that you have talent, ability, and you show that you love to dance when you dance. I don't think you should be scared because there will be other people there who are nervous too and are having the same thoughts. There will always be someone in your situation. Good luck and congrats!!!!! Quote Link to comment

madidancer121
One of my friends went last year and said it was a great experience. I wanted to add one thing, though: She wasn't originally going to go, but the the artistic director of my ballet school (her brother is a Principal dancer with New York City Ballet) told her that if she didn't go, she would have a really tough (like not-likely) time getting in ever again. She said they was serious people and if you audition and don't go, they put you, basically, "at the bottom of the list." I don't know if that is true. But I guess that make sense because they have so many people trying to get in. I think it would be an AMAZING experience. It's NOT easy to get accepted there! I think if you got in, there's a reason! Josiex33
madidancer121- I heard the same thing. They think you are not serious and you do not want to go to the program badly enough if you do not go when you get in. Quote Link to comment

She said they was serious people and if you audition and don't go, they put you, basically, "at the bottom of the list." I don't know if that is true. It isn't. Even with the immense explosion of information storage possible with computers today, it's a waste of time and file space for any school, even the Balanchine Machine, to retain records on every student who is accepted, yet does not attend. This story is an Urban Legend which preys on the fears of people who want to be accepted, and kids are particularly vulnerable in this respect. And like all Urban Legends, there are people who will SWEAR it's true, but it just isn't. Maybe we should turn this one over to Jamie and Adam on Mythbusters. As long as a student declines in a businesslike and proper manner, an actual snail-mail letter is best, there should be no repercussions from declining. Though on the one hand, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, but on the other hand, a bird in the hand can be messy! Quote Link to comment
