Where does the Esmerelda variation come from? Sorry if this is a bad question.

Believe it or not, it's from...Esmeralda. It's hard to tell with the really old ballets which were created in France and then restaged by Petipa and others in Russia. But I really believe that this is one of the variations that was by Pugni, and is sometimes heard as part of the "Diana and Acteon" pas de deux, and not something added by Petipa with Minkus or Drigo writing new music.
