I need opinions!

Okay, so my only 8th grade semi is the same day as the year end performance. I decided not to do year end, and go to semi. My best friend told me that she thought I wasn't dedicated and I was a slacker. This is the only time I've ever not done a perfromance, I work hard in class every day, and my teacher said she totally understood. But my BFF was mad, annoyed, and over-reacted. Now she is the most dedicated person I've ever met. I can't even compete. What do I do?!?!?!?!

You do what is right for you, and if your teacher understands, that is all that matters. You do not need to compete with your best friend, who will do what is right for her.

That said, what in the world is a semi???

You're in the 8th grade and drive an 18-wheeler truck? GANGWAY, everybody!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! A semi is a formal dance that you get to wear pretty dresses, get your hair done, wear amazing shoes. I have never been to one and I am really excited! (Except for the BFF deal)

 !!!!!!!

What do you mean 18 wheeler truck? I don't get it~ (I'm slow)

OOOHHH! Semi-formal. Dinner jacket and black tie for the gentlemen, dinner dresses for the ladies. Rather less confining than formal. White tie and tails for the men, things with trains for the ladies, which nobody can dance in. Imagine trying to dance in an Oscar dress!

And a "semi" is also short for "semi-trailer". It's a "big rig" in trucking jargon. The semi-trailer is actually only the towed part of the assembly, and it's "semi" only because it doesn't have its own front axle and wheels. The whole thing, "tractor" truck included, is generally referred to as a "semi".

Please delete if inappropriate - but felt I had to reply to Major Mel. When I was dancing in France, the ballet had to perform in the Operas too. Costumes were always authentique and I did learn how to walk backwards with a train - you have to give a little kick, likewise you have to kick the train round when turning a corner!!!

Good point, and it's a skill you need for stage. Most American women, I find, tend to overdress when they go to a "black tie" event, while the men retrogress to the very edge of "business attire". I believe that this phenomenon is traceable to the awards programs, where "over-the-top" seems enshrined.

As to the semi-trailer, I wouldn't like to see anybody trying to drive one of those in an Oscar dress, either!

Mel, my uncle drives a semi, and now I can't stop picturing my big, burly uncle behind the wheel in a floor-length pink Oscar de la Renta. With the plaid earflaps hat, too, of course :-)

There's a song for everything:

“A Ballet Dancing Truck Driver”

One day my grandma asked me,

“What do you want to be?”

I thought and thought and thought some more

I want to be a truck driver

(I want to be a truck driver).

But as I was watching TV

I thought ballet’s the dance for me.

So now I know I want to be

A ballet dancing truck driver

(A ballet dancing truck driver).

(There's more, but this is enough)

Okay, lots of fun, people, but, this is the YD forum. I think that the question has been answered and the poster is happy, so, I'm closing the thread because we now have too many posts from non-YD people, and, we are way off topic.
