Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 13, 2008 Administrators Report Share Posted April 13, 2008 Hello abtIs4me, welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers. I moved your post from How to Do Things, which is about how to function on the board, to the Young Dancers forum, which is about technique, which would include things like rotation. The best way to improve your rotation is to learn how to really USE it well all the time. Every exercise at the barre is geared towards improving rotation, but most especially rond de jambe à terre. Be very sure that you understand alignment, placement, and what muscles create your rotation. Then work those muscles on everthing you do. Spend some time on the rond de jambes outside of class, doing them very slowly and really feeling one leg working against the other leg. Quote Link to comment

Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 14, 2008 Administrators Report Share Posted April 14, 2008 abtIs4Me, is there a reason that you are using dots between every word? Just curious, as it is a bit strange. Quote Link to comment

Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 15, 2008 Administrators Report Share Posted April 15, 2008 Oh, okay. I would suggest a new keyboard. They are not expensive, and it's not worth it to have one repaired, in my opinion. Quote Link to comment

OxoXRoyal_Ballet_GirlXoxO
A good way to loosen up your hips before class so they feel more mobile in your excercises so you can use your turnout more easily is to stand facing the barre in first, lift your leg into coup de pied, then, keeping your hips square and steady, swing your raised leg by rotating it in the hip socket, so that you swing it turned in towards your body, turned out away from your body, and do this on both legs- your hips clunk a bit, but it's a good excercise!! Good Excercise, hard to explain!! Lots of Love, RBG_XoXo Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 17, 2008 Administrators Report Share Posted April 17, 2008 It would be best to do the above exercise with the working leg very low, and do it very slowly. You can get the hips moving a bit and work on the articulation of the foot at the same time. Another good exercise is to face the barre, flex the foot on the working leg, and make a front to side cirlce, or really semi circle, pushing forward with the heel and going to side and coming to first and repeat a few times. You don't stop in first and you keep the foot flexed. You can also do en dedans side to front. Quote Link to comment
quickfeet
Hi, when you are working on improving your turnout in a safe way, make sure that you are doing the excersises you are givin in a comfortable way. Any of these excersises above are good but, make sure that nothing is hurting in the hip when you go to do them. Another excersise you can do is start by lying on your side with your legs straight out and do slow pasas with the tip leg. Only open pasa until you feel you cannot anymore but, do not go past your natural ability. you will eventually be able to use a band and open slowly into pasa. Make sure you can feel your rotators working and your butt muscles. Lots of luck-- Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 17, 2008 Administrators Report Share Posted April 17, 2008 The above exercise is fine, although I think I would recommend using a retiré position, also known as a passé, since I don't believe we have anything in the vocabulary called a "pasa". [since passé means to pass, or passing, the position used in passing is a retiré. The exercise is describing a position.] Quote Link to comment

Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 20, 2008 Administrators Report Share Posted April 20, 2008 abt, just a reminder that nothing is going to change dramatically in a week! Ballet is a very slow process, and improving turnout is something that simply won't happen in a short period of time. What can change, however, is how well you USE the turnout that you have. Now, about your post above, with all the quotes...it would be fine to just say 'thank you everyone and I will try the exercises', or something like that, rather than quote and respond to each post.
