Talia Davis - BNC
I wanted to let everyone know what we have going on here in Colorado and hear about what everyone else is doing. Here is our upcoming show - Ballet Nouveau Colorado Presents Small Talk a nouveau showcase Join Denver’s PREMIER contemporary dance company – the one that’s getting all kinds of national buzz – for its season launch! BNC’s tradition is to launch each new season with a decidedly NON-traditional show. And this season is no different! A fast-paced dynamic program of short new works, SMALL TALK is an up-close, intimate show that kicks off the season like no other show can. See the company in a WHOLE NEW WAY as dancers reveal themselves as choreographers and storytellers. This diverse show gives the audience a chance to see the company dancers as individuals with a distinctive style that shines through their personal choreography. Two of the company members who will become choreographers for this show are Jason Franklin and Julia Meng. This will be Jason’s second year with BNC, and his second year choreographing for small talk. “I’ve been dancing, watching and just being around dance basically all my life,” says Franklin. “Turning my imagination into movement comes more naturally to me than, let’s say, painting or writing, and I feel like I have something interesting and worthwhile to show audiences.” Meng has been dancing with BNC longer than any other company member (she joined BNC in 2001), and has choreographed three times for previous productions. “I choreograph to explore not only dance and movement, but myself,” says Julia. “Choreographing for the company you dance with, for your peers, is a rare opportunity. We are allowed and encouraged to open up and push ourselves.” Artistic Director Garrett Ammon is a big believer in shows like this. "I’m very excited to open our 2008-09 season with this production. We have an incredibly creative group of artists who have a lot that they want to explore. This performance is a great way to get to know the company and see a wide variety of dance. I never cease to be surprised and captivated by what comes out of a program like this one."
