Guest MasterPuppeteer
I'm going to the City by the Bay in two weeks and will be taking some drop-in classes at SF Dance Center. Can anyone tell me what to wear? And don't y'all be like, "Wear anything you want." Wearing the same type of gear as the other students lessens my anxiety when joining a new class in a new studio in a new city. So tell me, SPECIFICALLY, what do the adults in the beginner drop-in classes wear? Each studio has its own culture and the city of SF is of course funkier than most. I'm sure SFDC is the same way, right? Or not? Should I bring layers? Gym-style clothes (as in lycra/spandex/shorts)? Pink tights all the way? Black or color? Traditional dancewear or add some of my hip hop gear in the mix? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
dancemaven
Perhaps this existing thread will provide some guidance: What should I wear for a open class at Lines Ballet? (The San Francisco Dance Center classes are often referred to as Lines Ballet classes.) Quote Link to comment
lampwick
The beginner classes I've observed tend to be more conservative in attire than the Intermediate and advanced levels. That said, wear whatever you're comfortable with. You'll get more out of the class if the teacher (and you) can see your body, so I personally stick with reasonably form-fitting attire. Personally, I can't stand those "gaucho" pants in ballet class. Quote Link to comment

Some people wear yoga clothes, and fail to understand the need for form-fitting attire. There are movements where the foot is brought alongside the leg. Ease of movement without clothes getting in the way makes a dancer better. A few times I've done passe to an extension and sloppy sweats always get in the way. Just wear tights and snug legwarmers. lampwick
Shorts over a leotard seems to be a popular choice at Lines, and that's what I wear in class. But it's not really "proper" ballet attire... Just thought I'd throw that out there:) Quote Link to comment
ineluctability
Ah! This is so weird this is posted. I'll be in SF soon enough - my mom is at UCSF waiting on organ transplant and I think this looks like THE place for open classes?? Quote Link to comment
