Documentaries: Ballerina

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any information on this movie? Did anyone here see it in PA? I am really hoping to go to Ballerina, but you guys in the BIG cities are a little more advantaged. I wouldn't miss this if I was near enough to go. For me it means no less than 8 hours travel and an overnight - I don't think I can do that for a film alone, maybe, if we go the Russian Tea Room too, mmmm!

But, I looked to see if it coincided with any SI auditions in major cities, no small feat. It works in NY, with ABT and SAB.

Features Ulyana Lopatkina, Diana Vishneva, Evgenia Obraztsova, and Alina Somova. There's a synopsis, Cast and Crew, and Playdates section on the website, playdates: http://firstrunfeatures.com/ballerina_playdates.html

It's only played at film festivals so far, but this release schedule is rather unusual for a documentary about ballet. Very wide. Maybe you won't have to travel so far to see it. The showings at Bryn Mawr had and the upcoming Lincoln Center showings will have q&a with the director. Naturally, the runs will not.

Oh - after checking out the website, it looks like, if the movie becomes a dvd, it might sell on this website? (I hope, I hope).

Wow, for once we are ahead of the USA down here in Australia! This documentary was shown on public television here about two months ago!

Basically they interviewed ballerinas at different stages of their careers- just got into the company, first year, rising star, getting back into dancing after an extended break etc. They seemed to focus most on Evgenia Obraztsova, possibly because she went from a young dancer to rising star relatively quickly.

As far as dancing goes, they showed quite a lot of classroom work, with only small snippets of performances.

It is palying in a theater on 13th street in NYC. This is typically done for the Oscars. Movies must be shown for a specified time in NYC and LA. But I think Oscar Voting is over.

Perhaps it is part of a direct to video strategy. Play in major cities, get a snippet or two from a movie reviewer, get a buzz going, then sell it at Best Buy and Wal-Mart.

Executive at Best Buy told me a DVD movie has to do well the first weekend or it will be relegated to the back shelves.

Cheers,

I don't think it was done for the Oscars. The timeline's a little late for that and it's right up the Quad's alley for documentaries. Sadly, it's not playing there anymore.

I've been hoping to go and see it in Washington DC. It is playing at the Landmark E Street Cinema. This is the beginning of the third week, so I hope it sticks around a bit longer. I've been travelling with an auditioning dancer.
