winddancer9
Odette/Odile, hands down. I have been in love with Swan Lake since I was eight years old and I saw a local company perform it. They weren't very good dancers, but I didn't know that at the time, and I was swept up in the romance and tragedy of it all. I am also absolutely in awe of any ballerina who can transition seamlessly from lyrical Odette to feisty Odile in one performance. One of my favorite Odettes is Gillian Murphy; until I saw video of her performance I didn't know it was possible for a human to so resemble a swan while wearing a tutu. Every nuance of her body, particularly her neck and feet, so precisely expresses the plight of the cursed swan maiden that it is almost unnerving. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted January 11, 2009 Administrators Report Share Posted January 11, 2009 Mimi, I know you are from Portugal, and English is not your first language, however, I would really appreciate it if you would try to use a captial letter for beginning a sentence, and when you use names, and also "I". Thank you! Quote Link to comment
dancerchik
I would have to agree with you winddancer9, Odette is my favorite dance character! Odile is amazing too and when Gillian Murphy does it her fuette's are inredible! Quote Link to comment
winddancer9
I know! I watched her black swan fuettes about 10 times consecutively, I just couldn't believe they were real! Quote Link to comment

Laura
my favorite character is either Odile or Kitri :] Quote Link to comment
Hamorah
Tatiana in Onegin and Juliet in R & J - I love the classic ballets such as Swan Lake and Giselle, but don't identify with the heroines in the same way that I do with these two ballets. Romeo in R & J and Basil in Don Q are my favourite male characters (especially when the latter is danced by Baryshnikov!) Quote Link to comment
Clara 76
Hmmm..... you've given me food for thought, Hamorah. I suppose I've never had much of a favorite ballet character because most of the female leads have to be rescued by their prince. With your exceptions, and your reasons, it made me think about that. I guess that's why my moniker is so apt- Clara doesn't need any prince- she just bashes her enemy over the head with her pointe shoe! I think that's why I relate so to Alice in Wonderland- no princes needed. That said, there is nothing as romantic as the delicate (but strong) ballerina dancing with the prince. Quote Link to comment
vagansmom
As a character, I love Swanhilda in "Coppelia" because, as my Irish friends love to say, "she's got moxie!" Quote Link to comment
Clara 76
I just thought of another one: Desdemona from John Butler's "Othello". If ever there was a role I would love to dance.... Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted March 31, 2009 Administrators Report Share Posted March 31, 2009 Hagar in Pillar of Fire. Yep, I'm a Tudor fan, big time. I did not get to dance it, but that, and Lizzie Borden (DeMille's Fall River Legend) were the two roles that I really wanted to do. Yes, I loved the tutu ballets, but there is something more appealing to me in the dramatic roles. Quote Link to comment
Clara 76
I would have paid top dollar to have seen you dance that role!! Quote Link to comment
Claude_Catastrophique
I love Kitri. Then I like La fille male gardée (I forgot her name but I guess you know who I mean) and (forgot the name too) the Revolution-sister from La belle vie (not the one who becomes a nightclub dancer, the other one). Let me think...there was another one: Cinderella! (I'm a shoe addicted...so you can imagine why!) For males, I like Rotbart, Puck, Basil and Le Corsaire. Quote Link to comment
