meghan-dancer
I love the pointe shoe its so pretty looking and its amazing how people work in them. Anyway I probably won't ever be a ballerina on pointe because I started really late in years. Doesn't it hurt a little when your on tippy toe? Are they comfy? I'm kinda interested in all those questions about pointe. meghan-dancer Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted January 15, 2009 Administrators Report Share Posted January 15, 2009 I was one who never had any problems in pointe shoes, however, that is not the case for everyone. I'm not sure that "comfy" is the right word, but, it really should not hurt. If you get blisters, that hurts, but, if the shoes fit right, you should not get blisters! Quote Link to comment
meghan-dancer
Cool! not to be nosy or anything but how old were when you started pointe? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted January 17, 2009 Administrators Report Share Posted January 17, 2009 Too young, but I was lucky because I had strong legs and feet and somewhat exceptional rotation. But I'm sure I did not have enough training and certainly no control of alignment and no knowledge of what I was doing at that time. I was 10. I do NOT recommend that and do not put 10 year olds on pointe. Quote Link to comment
Lexii
I started going on pointe when I was 9. I thought that it would be so hard to be on pointe, but when I was on them, they didn't really hurt that bad. There are toe pads that you put in your shoes so its not uncomfortable. Sometimes your feet could hurt when your wearing them for a long time!!! Quote Link to comment

I was also 10 when I went on pointe and though I had strong legs, I just didn't have strong enough technique. I developed some horrible habits, some of which I still have to work to keep in check. It took me several years and multiple ankle injuries to learn how to dance properly on pointe. Quote Link to comment
DanaD
I started pointe when I was 10 also. But, I didn't have ANY guidance. My teacher simply said, "go get some pointe shoes." so I ordered the cheapest pair on discount dance. Smart, I know. Quote Link to comment
meghan-dancer
Wow you guys were kinda young when your were started. Anyway thanks for sharing your experience with me! Quote Link to comment
Je_suis_une_danseuse
I had trouble with my pointe shoes at first. (we are only allowed to use tape and lambs wool.) It hurt for the first couple weeks until my feet got use to the pressure. I've found that, if you aren't allowed to use gel pads, that wearing a band-aid on top of your big toe really helps. Also, if you clip your toe nails every couple of days then it doesn't hurt so bad. Well that's what I do anyway. I started pointe at 14. Quote Link to comment
ballerinabelle
I started pointe when I was 14. Pointe shoes aren't exactly comfortable (they're definitely not bunny slippers!) but you shouldn't be in pain. In my experience, the most important thing is to listen to what your muscles and your body are telling you- at the beginning, I could only go on pointe for 10 minutes at a time! Quote Link to comment
balletsweetie
I started "pre-pointe" when I was twelve - at my studio there is a specific class for beginning pointe dancers. I did that once per week for 30 minutes for a year, it got a little more advanced as time progressed but was still very very minimal. I didn't start doing actual pointe until I was thirteen though. Pointe shoes were pretty uncomfortable for me at first. Now they're only uncomfortable/hurt if I've had a long, hard class or rehearsal. You'll definitely get used to them! Quote Link to comment
Blu
I went on point when I was 11, but I stopped and now am on point again at 14. Point shoes are not comfortable but I never really had any problem getting used to them. At my dance studio all we were allowed to use was one paper towel and that hurt a little but mostly because of the blisters you would get. Once you get used to them they feel fine, one thing that I did n't realize at first was that I would not look like the people you see on point when you first start, that usually takes a while. toetapper
I started pointe when I was 10 and I did just fine, however, my ballet teacher really knows what she is doing and started me off on pointe only at the barre and gradually moved up. Pointe isn't that painful except for when you are on a brand knew pair of pointe shoes and you are trying to break them in. And don't feel bad if you don't get them right away because it is all about your strength! Quote Link to comment
