Rob, where is the Hammond School? I'm sorry, but I am not familiar with it. Is it in the US?

Well done!

The Hammond School is one of the top vocational schools in the UK but the focus is more on Musical Theatre than classical ballet.

If you are offered a place, you will automatically be invited to a second audition to determine suitability for funding. The school does not have many MDS places available but they do seem to offer quite a few bursaries as well. In the past, parents have been asked to complete a very detailed financial form before the final audition and this will help the school determine what funding they offer. MDS and funding will be offered to the most talented students, in their eyes, and then the amount of funding offered will depend on parental income etc. Hope that helps!

Congratulations Rob. It would be a good idea to go on ballet.co and search for Hammond - I'm sure we've all discussed the format of auditions for various schools on there in the past and there are current threads about this year's auditions.

Sorry to disagree 'ifnotwhynot' but it is not correct to suggest that the Hammond focusses more on musical theatre than classical ballet, as the emphasis on daily dance training (6 days a week) is most definitely on classical ballet. However, if a child is more interested and gifted in drama, singing and music than classical dance then the Hammond do offer a completely separate vocational training to accommodate this.

I include a BBC link to demonstrate the strength of this schools classical dance training capabilities for your interest!

I did not mean to mislead but my experience is that auditions for this school, especially the final audition, have a strong emphasis on Musical Theatre skills as well as ballet, whereas there are other schools in the UK that are purely classical in focus. This does not mean that the school does not produce exceptional classical dancers but, as far as I am aware, the majority of it's students do not follow this path.

Very sorry to contradict again 'ifnotwhynot' but as potential new parents are reading this forum for advice, I really feel I must contradict your thread again in order to convey correct information about this school.

I have previously stated there are a number of different vocational performance training opportunities available at The Hammond School and this may be where some of your misunderstanding lies? To be clear, all the different training genres have their own very separate audition process, i.e, vocal, music, drama, academic. However, the final dance audition at Hammond is all about assessing shortlisted candidates for MDS scholarship funding and as such, is completely focussed on a child's ballet potential as MDS scholarships are simply not made available for musical theatre training. The final audition for dance candidates at the Hammond is therefore restricted to a ballet class, stretching and physio assessment only and is definitely nothing at all to do with any kind of musical theatre assessment.

Information on the governments MDS funding criteria can be sourced on http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/mds/

Can I remind posters that we ask for first hand experience? That is, if you have a child at the school, or your child has gone through the audition process, or you teach or study at the school.

And we should also bear in mind that even first hand experiences can be different for different children and their families.

I am indeed, talking from experience! My dd auditioned for all four main schools in the UK last year. In the first Hammond audition, she had a ballet class, a modern/jazz class, a singing workshop and had to perform a dance solo, which could be in any discipline. There were also some academic tests and a physio assessment. She was offered a place but, for a variety of reasons, we decided not to accept before attending the scholarship audition. From the information I was sent about the day, I gathered that this audition was based around a musical theatre workshop which will, of course, have included some ballet.

My previous comments were not specifically about the MDS awards as I am aware that they are available only to students showing potential in classical dance. I do, however, think it is fair to say that out of the four schools in the UK, Hammond does not have the strongest focus on this discipline. I think this is illustrated by this quote from their website:

The Lower School Dance Course provides talented boys and girls with a specialised training in dance and the arts. The course consists of the highest standard of ballet training with classes in other dance disciplines including modern, tap, contemporary, jazz and supported adage, producing strong, versatile dancers.

Thank you Redbookish that is a very good recommendation - I will say no more on this matter other than to say that I have "firsthand" experience of both the complete audition process and the dance training provided by the Hammond School.

I think it is now time to move this thread to the Pre-Professional/Residency School Forum where folks researching schools will have benefit of those with first-hand experiences. Also, it will permit young dancers with experience at the school to also post. Thanks for bringing this school up for discussion!
