paxaman0
So my parents decided I can't do ballet. I talked with my mom about it and she doesn't want me to be doing it and she won't help me pay for it. I'm 18 so that kind of frustrates me and is a real heartbreaker. I wanted to do it but she thought that it was only for gay people or stuff like that and she questioned me whether I'm into the gay lifestyle. It's so frustrating, she doesn't understand my love for dance and how I want to be a strong man like how men are supposed to be. Any advice for me guys? I'm so disappointed. Quote Link to comment

What if I practiced on my own though? Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
So find a job that pays $14 an hour. And believe it, there are jobs out there at entry level that DO pay that. As to self-teaching, the result will be a lot like trying to teach yourself the clarinet. The results will be so ghastly, you'll give up. BUT - don't give up before you start. If you really want to dance, you'll find a right way to do it. Press on! Quote Link to comment
paxaman0
Thanks for the encouragement man. I may go on the dancers diet and get some of the stuff with allowance cash by biking down there on my own time or driving once I get my license. Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
That's the spirit! Look forward to the things that will enable you to dance, not the hindrances. As you go through life, brother,Let this be your goal: Keep your eye on the doughnut And not on the hole! Hey, I was even able to find ways to keep dancing while I was on active duty in the Regular Air Force 1970-1974, and military pay was pretty sucky then. Quote Link to comment

I don't get why guys are stereotyped as gays in ballet it's not fair, a lot of guys in dance/ballet are some of the most muscular guys I've ever seen! I think it's just that people aren't manly enough to wear tights or a leotard. Too scared of ruining their precious reputation imo. Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
You bring up a good point. It's terribly hurtful for one's own family to send such negative messages, besides. Feel sorry for them. They're insecure, too. Quote Link to comment
Kev
HI Heartbreak: Many dance studio will let you clean the studio in exchange for free dance classes! They are ALWAYS looking for male dancers! I get free dance classes including because I work at the studio office and I do general maintenance of the studio. Just ask and you might beable to start ballet. Follow your heart! I know there are so many people with sterero typing about guys being gay if they take ballet! Keep us posted! Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Hi Kev - Welcome to the Men's Forum on Ballet Talk for Dancers! Why don't you visit the Welcome forum and tell us a little bit about yourself? Quote Link to comment
Kini
Heartbreak, You can always do what many of us have done and pay for your classes. While I never got free classes I never paid full tuition either and always did some work around the studio I was at. Besides learning ballet I also learned how to dry wall, build a suspend wood floor, hang mirrors and doors. Edited July 20, 2010 by gburk Quote Link to comment
jimpickles
It seems to me that if you somehow manage to go ahead and get your classes anyway, this show of dedication is likely to bring your parents around to your own point of view better than anything else. Jim. Quote Link to comment
