Foreverblackswan
Hello all, The ballet school I'm currently attending, has a focus more on modern and contemporary. While I know being versatile is a good thing, I would rather go to a school where the emphasis is more on ballet. The only thing is, I've tried every school in the area. All the schools outside the area are about an hour to two hours away, and they are either in a style that doesn't work for me, or I would be two heavy to be accepted. I'm very skinny, but I'm a little more muscular and a little more busty than an average dancer. Think Gillian Murphy body type. I want to get good training, like a pre-pro school, but the only other way would be, me leaving my parents, or splitting up my family. My parents are already considering the move, but I can see the affect this choice is having on them. I know the right choice is to move away from them, so they don't have to move, but I don't know if I'm ready. I'm also worried if my family does move, what if I get injured or don't make it? I'm just confused and scared. I just need some advice. Thanks, Foreverblackswan Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted August 30, 2010 Administrators Report Share Posted August 30, 2010 From your profile it looks to me like you are in an area with excellent schools. I'm not sure why you would need to consider moving away for training. However, if you are considering that, it is a family decision, and not one that we can make for you. It might help if your parents read the parents board, where there is a lot of discussion about residency programs, moving away, and all things connected to that. There is also discussion of the family moving versus the student moving, and lots of other discussions, on the Pre-Pro and Residency Schools General Topics. Quote Link to comment
Foreverblackswan
Hi, Could you please tell me what schools in my area are exellent? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted August 30, 2010 Administrators Report Share Posted August 30, 2010 The most well known would be San Francisco Ballet. There are a number of other good schools, too. I know Marin Ballet is good, and I don't think that is far from SF. I would also look into Lines. I'm sure there are several more, but these are the ones with which I am most familiar. Quote Link to comment
Foreverblackswan
I'm sorry but I don't live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Those schools are 3 or more hours away from where I live. I'm not sure my training has been good enough for SFB. I trained at a pre-pro school in my area but they aren't a pre-pro school anymore ;which is why I had to change studios, so my training hasn't been bad but I think I'm still a little behind other girls my age. I have been accepted to residency programs though. I'm just not sure I am ready to leave home. My ballet teacher at the school I am at is very good but my school is only offering 9.5 hours of ballet this year. They combined pointe and technique into one class. I asked my teacher if I could take some lower level classes so I could get more hours. We don't have character, variations or pas de deux. I think I could do well if I could get more hours and the right kind of classes. I improved a lot after my summer intensive this year. Thank you very much for your help. I will continue to discuss this with my parents. Quote Link to comment
