paxaman0
Hello all, I recently biked down to my ballet school Zamuel Ballet School and talked to the instructor. He is a little hard to understand because he has a strong Russian accent. But I told him that I had never done ballet before in my life. He seemed a little surprised and said "Come back on Monday and we can put you in the beginner class. That is mostly with girls between the ages of 9-13." Is this age difference an issue? If I'm the only adult guy in the class apart from the instructor won't that be a problem? Oh, the lady instructor told me no dancebelt is necessesarry just a tight fitting shirt and flats. By the way my mom and dad FINALLY gave me permission to dance and now are encouraging me to do it for it's many benefits. Quote Link to comment

Just make sure, if you aren't going to wear tights, to wear SOME kind of pants! Quote Link to comment
MJ
I Agree with Mister J, a Beginner class is where you should start. No dancebelt? Ugh! Enjoy the class, the young girls will be less of a disturbance as you get used to it. We have all taken class with teens. Warning: lots of muscles you never knew existed will hurt, getting out of bed the next day will be fun. This means you are doing things right. Let us know how it went, and don't get discouraged! Merde! Quote Link to comment
BarreTalk
Oh, the lady instructor told me no dancebelt is necessesarry I'm sure she is drawing from her vast personal experience wearing one to give that advice. Quote Link to comment
dennyland
Age differences are a great asset in class. An asset to the teacher, the kids and the older folks...as long as you are laser focused and work really hard at everything! NEVER NEVER NEVER take class without a DB, even in your home practice. It's not just a collision accident you have to protect from, it's also a soft tissue issue that I can't go into here. It's a serious, non-repairable concern. Quote Link to comment
silvergreydancer
Dancebelt aside. Well, yes and no as long as you don't mind feeling awkward taking instruction with children you will be fine. I did most of my training in children/youth classes. Don't expect the other students to converse with you. They will think this situation is a bit weird. Quote Link to comment
