NewtoDance
Hello, I have a 7-year old son who just started ballet in September. I know nothing about ballet. He is taking two classes a week. One class on a Tuesday with only one other student, a girl who has been taking ballet for a couple of years. The other class on a Saturday has about 12 students including my son and another boy. We enrolled him for this purpose, feeling that he would be more happy with another boy in the class. The fact that there are so few boys doesn't bother him at all, but his teacher asked me this Saturday if I would consider moving him to a new class she is going to have. She has selected 4 students that she wants to work more closely on technique with. She wants to prepare these students for their Level 1 and 2 exams. I agreed, knowing that my son is very keen and basically dances around all week in the house and practises every night at home. Can anyone tell me what is expected as knowledge for a Level 1 and Level 2 exam and how long you need to practise before you take these exams? Any knowledge would be most helpful. CDR
It sounds as though it's their own 'in-house' exams as the teacher has specified levels rather than grades. Do you know if they use an external society such as RAD or IDTA? If so you would need to find out what grade he's going to be doing rather than a level number. Then someone can probably give you an indication of what would be included. If it's their own in-house system though there's really no way of knowing! Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
"Level 1" sounds like the way Cecchetti is ranked in Canada. But it really shouldn't matter - any system starting from the VERY BEGINNING won't have much difficulty moving students around and among the introductory levels. Quote Link to comment
NewtoDance
Thank you for your answers. I will definitely have to find out more from the teacher about what kind of exam this is and what it entails. It is all very confusing to me, but I am confident I will learn along with my son.
