arabesques

I have a pretty inflexible back, and as a result my arabesques are not what I would like them to be. I do back crunches regularly, but my arabesque just won't get any higher than 85 degrees. Is there any way to improve it?

Vermontballerina, if you are placed correctly in terms of alignment and moving your weight forward and upward, and still cannot get the leg up in the back, then the only thing I know is to just keep stretching. Have you done any Pilates or Gyrotonic work to help you gain more flexibility in your back?

I take pilates every Saturday for an hour before class. I feel as though part of the problem is that my teacher encourages us to have high arabesques and I often end up with my leg more to the side than directly behind me. I just can't seem to put it there.

No such thing as can't get it behind you, Vermont. If you make it go behind you, it will. It doesn't have a mind of it's own!

Work with your Pilates teacher on the specific things you need to do all week to help with your back flexibility.
