rlyons
So...for some reason I really want a pretty but not too fussy ballet tunic but it is nigh on impossible to find a nice one. The DEGAS site has some but they are not offered in the size I need which would be a medium adult size. I e mailed the lady and she said that they fit very small. I ordered a couple of styles from Discount Dance and they are far too princessy and not in a clean sophisticated way but in a little kid kind of way! From DD I tried the body wrappers adult camisole dress and it is a weird mesh thing that is none too flattering if you have a bust atall. Their Natalie V front and back dress is a little better but a bit tight in the bust again and a little long and princessy too. Any ideas welcome...I would like something pretty but clean and elegant that would work with a chest. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
Mazenderan
Can you sew? Might be a good option if you're after something specific. Quote Link to comment
rlyons
LOL...HELL no!!! My Mother is horrified but this is one skill that definitely ecapes me! ;) Quote Link to comment
luceroblanco
A woman in my dance class had a black one and she said she got from Discount Dance. It looked nice. Quote Link to comment
LaFilleSylphide
Just cut the skirt to whatever length you want. Quote Link to comment
Mazenderan
LOL...HELL no!!! My Mother is horrified but this is one skill that definitely ecapes me! ;) But it sounds like your Mum can sew......... Bribery, perhaps, in exchange for your perfect leotard? Quote Link to comment
rlyons
All good ideas, thanks! Especially the one about my Mother making one for me...LOL! We shall see... ;) I DID find a Degas tunic that I was told would fit me in a T2 and you can wear a bra with it...but $106!!??? I am tempted but I think it would irritate me so much if it didn't fit! AND it's only available in black...black is great but I wanted a little change Quote Link to comment
LaFilleSylphide
Seriously, just order one of the Natalies or Body Wrappers from discountdance.com. They're cheap and you can just cut them to whatever length you want. That kind of "I did it myself" modified look is true dancer-style anyway. If you really want to look like a dancer, go homeless-chic. There was a long and amusing thread about dance fashion and trends on here once. It can be broken down into some basic categories (and even larger subcategories haha!) 1.) Designer Dancer - she wears only Yumis, Lolas, Wear Mois, and Degas... she's awesome, and her wallet's probably awesomely fat too considering the price tags of her leos, 2.) Next is the student-costume dancer. Her leotard of choice is a short sleeved, 100% cotton scoop necked black Capezio leotard, a wrap skirt, pink tights, one strap elastic shoes, and pink legwarmers. More often than not, she's a new dancer who hasn't been introduced to the world of cut-throat internet deals like discountdance.com and dresses the part of a picture-book dancer to fuel her new endeavor into dance and to match her mental image of ballerina. 3.) Vagabond Ballerina - is that a panhandler in your class? Or, if you happen to be living in Europe, is that a homeless person smoking out the open window of the classroom? Nothing matches, nothing fits well, tights (if worn at all) are sometimes worn on the outside of the leotard (for some reason), and all of their clothes seem to have been customized with excruciatingly dull scissors. These are the folks that you think are mopping the floors before class, but lo and behold, the music starts and they're stunning! They remember every complicated allegro step despite the fact that they seem to have forgotten how to dress themselves. I remember once stating that I always am intimidated when I walk into an open class full of homeless looking street people because those are inevitably the best and most beautiful, despite their mismatched leg warmers, self-shortened skirts, modified-cut baggy faded sweatshirts. Sometimes, when I'm in a class full of pink chiffon skirts, I find it to be a class of newbies in "dancer costume". So again, go for it. Grab a pair of sharp (not dull haha) scissors and hack away! Cut 1/4" at a time until you get to the length you want and so you can stop yourself before you take off too much. Quote Link to comment
rlyons
LaFilleSylphide, that is BRILLIANT!!!! LOVE it! I guess that right now I am more student costume dancer but I super LOVE the look of the artsy vagabond!!!!!;) I am a very artsy dresser in "real" life so why be so dull in class!? Afterall it IS an adult class and we can wear what we like! I might prefer less homeless more art chick!!! Quote Link to comment
Balletlove
LaFilleSylphide that post was just brilliant, "These are the folks that you think are mopping the floors before class, but lo and behold, the music starts and they're stunning! They remember every complicated allegro step despite the fact that they seem to have forgotten how to dress themselves" but probably very very true! Quote Link to comment
