Advice needed please

Hey guys

So the screen name is a play on the Adam Sandler song, and you guessed it, I'm a kicker.

Next year I'll be a senior in high school, and honestly the only way I can get college paid for is if I win a scholarship. My dad's been out of work, we lost the house etc. Please I'm not complaining about it so its all good

I've gotten some notice, but heard my leg strength might not be up to par.

So I'm scrambling around with things and work outs, and heard the stories about football players taking ballet.

So here I am, wondering if you all think ballet might help this punter/kicker out ?

I get that ballet is a physical thing, and hey the girls wouldnt hurt.

But I want to know if you all think this could help ?

I'm super dedicated to whatever I do so if I jump in to this, it's full throttle and not to make fun of it or anything like that

I'm in the Boston area so if you think it might help, if anyone has any ideas where I could go to take ballet classes that would be cool too

Hey there, lonesomekicker, and welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers.

It sounds like you've been through the wringer of this economy, and I'm glad to hear that you're master planning your way out of it!

Yes, ballet will help support the flexibility and rapid transfers of weight needed in sports of all sorts. The downside is that it's not a quick fix for anything. For ballet training to make a difference, it takes the better part of a year to show at all! But being a guy helps, as many schools will offer scholarships just to get you in the door!

Have you considered the school of the Boston Ballet?

Thanks Mel

I know I wouldnt see immediate benefits, but every little bit and all. I have about a year til I'd have to put a video together for the college coaches so maybe it might help?

I'll look into Boston Ballet, the $$ might be too much tho

Thanks any little bit helps

BB offers scholarships, but are geared towards students going professional. Ask if you can exchange classes for volunteer time as well. You'd have to wear ballet clothes, but football uniforms are more constricting.

A Pilates or Yoga class may also offer strengthening and flexibility.

Suggestion #3, find a physical therapist who specializes in dancers, get her/him to develop an exercise regimen that will strengthen any weaknesses you may have. If you can find a sports medicine doctor who specializes in kickers, that would be best. Hopefully your family insurance would cover such a specialist. Many doctors will offer a discount to people who cannot afford their services.

Some parts of Ballet would be very beneficial, Barre stretches and Grande Battement (aka "high kicks") exercises would be beneficial. Learning to do a pirouette would offer little or no benefit.

You might actually like it, you'll met astonishingly gorgeous women and gain poise and balance. What's not to like?

Just a piece of information from a friend that just came in from a friend via PM - Is where you are convenient to Norwell?

I think it's great that you want to try ballet: it's great to have more guys in it, and there may be some carryover to football --- who knows? But if you are serious about improving your football abilities, then you really need to train for that, especially if you are going to be in a competitive situation with scholarships.

Beyond technique and other things football-specific, you really have to be in a strength training program. There is no faster or more efficient way to build strength in general than good weight training. A great program is Starting Strength --- it's simple and it works, if you follow the program. Get the book (Starting Strength) here: http://startingstrength.com, and if you follow the program religiously (do the exercises, get enough rest, and eat enough food), you will be significantly stronger in 6 months. That will carry over to everything that you do or might do: football, running, ballet, any physical activity.

Good luck!

I don't mind wearing tights, I wear them when I kick anyway. Yes I realize UnderArmour cold gear is a bit different

My issue is the weight transfer - from the run up to the plant of my left leg as the right comes swinging through the ball. Just trying to get a better "feel" for that transfer
