Counting music that doesn't come in 8s

We are rehearsing a piece in my SI that the music comes in counts of 6s intead of 8s.

The teacher is breaking it down into counts of 6, but somehow my brain has difficulty learning it (my guess is that my brain was used to count in 8s, and was waiting for the non-existent 7th and 8th count all the time). I don't usually put myself into the "bad musicality" cataglory, that I learn better by hearing the music. But somehow, learning it in count, is now driving me crazy. We are only in the learning phase right now, so no music yet... HELP! And thanks!

Most orchestrated music is not all in counts of 8. I think that when you hear the music, you will hear the phrases and then not have to worry about the counts. However, the teacher really should be teaching you with music, having you learn to hear it right away. I could never choreograph to counts! Also, in classes there should be some variety in the music, so you learn to hear different phrasing, and accents, too.

Thanks, Ms. Leigh for your reply!

The teacher told us that the music was too fast so it would be wise to learn by counts at first. The problem is that I somehow just get stuck by expecting the 7th and 8th count. I feel relief that this won't be too much of a problem at the end. But I am still quite nervous.

In class, we do have a variety of music -- at least I can recognize tango, march, waltz, polka, mazurka, and polonaise. Is that enough? Is there anything else that I should learn to recognize?

Sounds like you are doing fine. Just learn to listen for the phrases, and with a lot music you won't even need to count! :D

Thanks, Ms. Leigh!

The piece is a mess in my head right now, with the teacher choreographing and re-choreographing the things so many time already. So it's great that I am hearing some reassurance now! :grinning:

Btw, is there anything I can do to learn the count better?

Wait until the piece is set, then learn how to count it, if necessary. No use in cluttering your mind with counts that may be undone by the next rehearsal.

Ballet Bunnie, I understand your confusion and frustration. I recently participated in an intensive for my upcoming exam and the teacher taking the class re-taught my exam dance in counts of 9! I didn't even know it was possible to dance in counts of 9, only counts of 4,6 and 8. My studio teacher didn't teach it using counts at all-- rather, she taught it in a way that required us to respond to the music. I think I like it better that way.
