Short Hair for Ballet Class

Recommended Posts

I've always kept my hair long so I could get it in a neat ballet bun but I just got back from my summer intensive so I got my hair cut really short. Now I can only put it up in a pony tail. I love having my hair cut short but I'm going to a pre-professional trainee program next year. Would it be unprofessional and unacceptable to have my hair in a very short pony tail for ballet class? Opinions?

Yes. You will need to form it into a bun. Dancers wear their hair in buns and those who have very short hair sometimes purchase hair pieces to go around the short ponytail. Experiment with a hairnet to see what you can come up with.

Plus, it will probably grow over the summer!

cfdancer, I moved this topic to YD. If this is not the correct YD forum, please let us know and we will move it again. (Questions like this are for teachers, not for everyone.)

Clara76,

Thanks for your advice! I think I might be able to get it into a low bun, but I like high buns so maybe it will grow enough to put it up high... I'll try some other ways of putting it up.

Thanks Ms. Leigh for moving my post to the correct forum! I'm never really sure where to post things.

Try a French twist! Just use loads of bobby pins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (wonder why they're called "Bobby"????? says an easily distracted Clara :) )

That's a good idea!! Would that be professional enough for a ballet class? Haha, I've always wondered about that!

I think so.... I guess it would depend upon the rules for your classes! A beautifully done French twist is gorgeous.

The answer speaks to the issue of dramatically shortened ("bobbed") hair. Bobby pins were invented in 1936 (patented in 1937) to help manage the little loose ends of bobbed styles without over-reliance on hard or sticky hair lacquers or waxes (a 1920s solution), or worse, too-frequent trips to the hairdresser for women of ordinary means during the Depression.

I have short hair (shoulder length) too :) I mostly wear a donut for ballet class, like a foam/sponge circle that you put around your ponytail. I comb my hair over it and tuck it under and it looks just like a bun :)

I haven't tried a French twist for ballet before, because it's too fiddly for me to do quickly before class since I always seem to be running late, but I might :

I have hair above the shoulder with side-swept bangs, and I pin my hair into a bun, and pin back the bangs, all with bobby pins and intense amounts of hairspray
