Trouble remembering combinations

Recommended Posts

I've been dancing since August of last year(I'm 14 and intermediate/advanced). At first it was just for fun but I've become more serious with it. I want to move to another school because the one I'm at now is more involved with the acting and music. Here's the problem. I'm afraid I won't be able to remember the combinations because I'm having some difficulties remembering the ones at the less serious school. Is it because I've only been dancing for a year unlike other students who have been dancing longer? Or am I just missing something? Does anyone have any tips on remembering the combinations?

Thank you,

Ellyse

Welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers, Ellyse. :)

Remembering combinations takes a long time, certainly a lot longer than 11 months! My biggest concern for you is that you are in an "intermediate/advanced" class after less than a year of training. This is really not possible if you are really learning ballet correctly. I'm afraid that if you go to a ballet focused school you will be placed in a beginning level class, but, this will be a good thing. One really must have the basics, and unless you are having several hours of ballet a day, 6 days a week, I really don't think this can happen in the length of time you have been studying. My guess is that you are learning things that you should not be learning without the proper foundation, and it will mean re-learning everything. But don't be put off by that! Once you get started with "real" training, you will move very quickly and do everything so much better!

Well I've been working really hard but they don't have levels like companies do.They just have beginner, intermediate and advanced. I'd be totally fine with being placed in a beginners class at a studio that focuses just on dance. I'm just hoping I can afford to go to a better studio!

Thanks for the help Ms. Leigh!

Ellyse, please note the edits in your posts. I think you might benefit from doing some reading on the board, especially the "Sticky" topics, which explain how we work here. But also, just by reading more of the topics here, you will learn a lot! :)
