Pirouette technique question

LPM

Recommended Posts

My 10 year old daughter has been working on a getting a clean single pirouette. It appears to my untrained eye that she stuggles to stop the turn. At the end when she is trying to stop her arms seem to flail a bit. What should she be doing to stop the turn and land gracefully? Which muscles are used or what motion is used?

Thank you for any guidance.

I wish that question could be answered in one sentence, but there are so many factors that go into a pirouette!!!!!

How long are her ballet technique classes, and how many ballet technique classes is she doing per week?

LPM, the thing is, everyone struggles with pirouettes at 10 years old! And the end of the pirouette is the most difficult part. Her teacher will correct the problems, but it takes time. We could list all the potential reasons for the difficulties, but we really don't believe in parents trying to correct their children. That is the teacher's job! :)

At my 10 year old DD school, this is the year they "learn" to pirouette! This is a huge deal with the girls, and the school doesn't even introduce it till after the new year! lol She is too excited, and it really gives me a chuckle. She seems so grown up most of the time and then this; too cute! I get the feeling they want the girls in the groove of four 1.5 hour classes a week before they teach the complicated stuff.

Good to hear that, buzzandmoo. Too many schools teach pirouettes before the students have enough control of their alignment and rotation to hold a relevé on one foot, much less do it turning!

Ballet is 1 hour class twice a week and an hour and 15 minute class once per week.

She is very motivated and comes home and works on anything she has trouble with in class. She keeps working until she gets it. She asks me for help and I have no idea what to tell her.

I am glad she is taking 3 classes per week. That is normal for the age, but typically classes would be 1.5 hours.

As Miss Leigh stated above, being sure that children have the underpinnings is very important before they begin pirouettes. :grinning: Maybe she could ask her teacher for some extra help?
