Achilles Problems?

The achilles on my right foot hurts. And it's been hurting off and on for 3 days, I think. The thing is before, I'd only feel it during the beginning of barre, then it would go away, so I never told my mom, because I forgot! But this morning it hurt when I got up. But, I can't stop dancing...is there any reason besides tendonitis, that maybe it's hurting? And is there a way to help it, without stopping dance?

OK, this is a prima facie case for the doctor. When you have a pain that comes and goes during class, that's one thing, but when it comes back outside of class, that's a reason to find out just what's going on, and you need a physician to determine that. Achilles' tendons are not to be viewed lightly. There are lots of things that could be happening, and the time to take care of it is NOW, not some time in the indeterminate future. You need to find out a specific cause, and then an exact treatment. Resting is only one option in a therapy.

Ok...well same thing happened today at dance! It hurt to pointe my foot at the being of barre, and then it doesn't hurt anymore! Why's that?

We are not doctors, so we do not know what the problem is. You will need to see an orthopedic doctor, and preferably one who works with dancers. Call your nearest professional company for a recommendation.

Ok, thank you so much, both of you!

Another question, when you get cramps on your arch, what should you do?

Stop doing what is causing the cramp, stretch it out and massage it a bit. It will go away. But, you need to figure out what is causing the cramping in the first place. Are you gripping? Pointing your foot without using the energy from the body through the leg? Check your alignment and weight placement and be sure you are lifted out of your legs, so that you can point your foot by using the leg, not just the foot.

Ok, my teacher said to get a tennis ball and roll it under the arch? Well, yesterday it was cramping when I was on pointe, doing petite allegro.

The tennis ball is another method that can work well for that problem. Or you can buy a foot roller. Either one is good and the tennis ball is cheaper. :(

I don't know why you are cramping, but there has to be a reason. If it is not a technique problem then it could be that your shoes are too tight. Or, you could be low on potassium. But you would also need a doctor to find out if that is the case or not. It's more likely has to do with shoes and/or technique.

Ok, I'm going to use the tennis ball!

Yeah...I'd say it was the shoe...maybe not supporting my arch enough? But I don't know of any other shoes to try...
