ascballerina
Is third position used for any purpose besides as a "prequel" for fifth? I'm curious, because if it isn't, then why do we have five positions, not four (calling third a preparation for fifth or "baby fifth", maybe)? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted January 1, 2012 Administrators Report Share Posted January 1, 2012 Good question, asc. My guess is that in the very early days of ballet, going back to court dance, that position was more commonly used. Today, not so much! It is really pretty useless except for the purpose you stated. Mel Johnson
However, it is one of the ideal positions for just standing around in the big full-length story ballets. It's also left over from the days when a bit of fencing could be expected in the court ballets. Quote Link to comment
ascballerina
Ah! There is a use for it! (sorta) Thanks, Mr Johnson! Quote Link to comment
