Arabesque

As far as I know, once you get past ninety degrees with your leg, your back has to come forward a bit, still staying upright and supported, right? So if you're going to do a really, really high arabesque, you almost automatically go into a penche? (Correct me if I'm wrong, because that's the whole point of this post)

So, how can this happen? Picture Link Is it a hole in my understanding, does she simply have more flexibility in her back than I accounted for? Because her entire back is almost completely upright, and I would have thought she'd need to be heading into a penche by that point....

She has great flexibility, however, it is not unusual for dancers to have that high an attitude (the long attiude, not a square one) or arabesque and not be in penché. Yes, the weight of the body moves forward and upward in opposition to the leg moving backward and upward. Totally possible! :D
