Using right muscles to lift leg?

Recently in a class one of my instructors mentioned that we should be using the muscles on the underside of our legs to lift them. I've heard this before, but I've always had trouble grasping it. I feel like I am using the muscles on the top of my leg to "hoist" my leg higher, which is incorrect. Does anyone have any imagery on advice on this?

Jeteforjoy, check out this recent topic. Her question was similar to yours and I responded. If that does not help, let me know. There are other threads on this subject, but I don't remember where they are. I will try to find them tomorrow.
