Sports and ballet

Hi,

I was wondering if playing other sports (ie netball) would be detrimental on my ballet and dance training.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I need to decide whether or not to stop next season.

It depends on the sport, moostachiojoe. Some sports are fine, some not really so good. I'm afraid that I am not familiar with netball. Is that like what we call volleyball, maybe?

Moostachiojoe, my ballet teacher always says that netball is damaging because of the no-step rule after you catch the ball, causing you to twist your knee in your effort not to move. Of course, I'm not 100% sure she's right but I do trust her and believe that it is true because it does make a lot of sense. (sorry, jumping in because I know what effects netball has, and I'm not sure many people do, because they don't play it in their countries :) ).

Thank you, butterfly. I think I need to google netball and see what it looks like, but, it totally makes sense to me that if you to stop like that it could be a problem.

Sure Ms Leigh, always happy to help. If it helps, netball is closest to your basketball, I think, although it is played only by girls.

Yes, I checked it out. It really doesn't look that problematic, unless there is the kind of knocking down and hitting on each other that goes in basketball and some other sports!

Thanks for the advice Ms Leigh and balletbutterfly.

Do you think that it will be too harsh on my knees if I continue next season?

I really don't know, moostachiojoe. However, if, when you play, you feel that there is any potential danger in terms of injuries that would stop your training in ballet, then you will need to quit. A parent posted information which had to be removed, since parents cannot post here, but her thoughts were that there are a lot of potential injury problems.
