In the US there is no set system. There are many schools of all kinds, from strict ballet schools to recreational schools to competition schools with all forms of dance, and pre-pro schools, some of which are audition only at certain ages, and other which are not audition only in the early years. Most of the professional company schools in the US are considered pre-pro schools, but there are many other school who have also proven themselves to be of the the caliber that can train dancers to the professional level. It's really quite different than in the UK, but, there are a lot of roads that lead to Rome. :)
