Is Ballet Necessary for a Professional Dance Career?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I am pretty new to this forum and I hope this is the right place to post this topic.

I am 14 years old and my dance training is focused on contemporary and hip hop. I do take ballet classes but the hours I take them are very far from what will take me to a professional ballet school/ career. I would like to be part of the dance industry when I grow up, is it possible to be a professional dancer without a lot of ballet training?

Solid ballet training helps to elevate your Contemporary and Hip Hop training so that you are more marketable.  This does not mean that you cannot become a Hip hop dancer without ballet training.  This does not mean if you have a strong ballet based Contemporary teacher who teaches through ballet that you can't become a professional.  It simply means that most professional dancers in those genres are trained in more than one area and a ballet base helps.

We are a ballet based board and therefore, our information will be most helpful for ballet trained dancers who want to branch out to something else than the reverse.
