Ballet Talk for Dancers

Ballet/Behavior/School Balance

Recommended Posts

My perspective is that even if kids’ behavior is “normal”, if they go from being pleasant and cooperative to surly and unhappy, they are telling us that their life is out of balance or something isn’t working.  Maybe it’s dance, or maybe it’s something else, but I’d be disinclined to write it off as normal tween angst/hormones without exploring further.

And the amount of dance you describe is a lot.  For what it is worth, my (admittedly late-starting) daughter was taking 3 hours of class, two days a week when she was 9. At 10, it was up to 6 hours over three days, plus usually no more than an hour of rehearsal on the weekends.  At 17, she is most definitely not behind her peers.

Good luck!  This is hard stuff to figure out!
