2019/2020 College Congrats Thread

Recommended Posts

Momof3darlings

The time is here! We want to celebrate, congratulate and share in the joy of our parents, dancers and even teachers who have students reaching the goals of one of the following: Ballet trained dancers attending colleges in dance related majors, Ballet trained dancers attending college in other majors but continuing to dance

The purpose of this thread is to congratulate those who have accepted and are attending either a Ballet specific college program for the fall or plan to attend college and dance on the side while majoring in another subject.

We ask that our College bound wait to share until they have made a FINAL decision where they are going. We do not want this thread to become a string of acceptances and scholarship information. We want to celebrate your transition into the academic world and that includes your decision on an actual offer to take. Teachers, please have permission of your parent/dancer to post.

In prior years, this thread has not only been used to celebrate, but also to track, confirm and debunk some of the "beliefs" out there about who and how college decisions are made. So we do ask that you share a bit about your journey without too many specifics. This helps our younger members see the wide variety of training, acceptances, etc. that come from our membership. We understand that we are but a very small segment of the ballet world here at BTFD, but over time, we've learned that we can see trends within our membership.  Feel free to post and share the actual college or not, that is up to you!

Feel free to either write the information in paragraph form or use the guideline we've developed over time.

So as coined by one of our members, Let the "Contractuballetions" begin:

(Sample form)

Gender:

Main/Most recent training: (ex. small local school, small company affiliated school, residency, etc. Do not list the program unless you want to)

Level of school completed: high school grad, partial college, college grad

Audition method: SI audition, YAGP, video, on site

School attending: major or minor

Position process/progress: graduating high school, or attending after being a Trainee or professional dancer for a time.

Words of wisdom about the process/decisions:

I am super excited that my daughter has committed to The BFA in dance program at the University of Arizona this fall.  This has been a long but exciting process starting sophomore year of high school with a spring break trip to Arizona ., followed by trips to NYC and LA just to look at schools .   The audition season has been crazy as well with 4 weeks of Mono  in mid October!  Yes that was a little bump in the road !  Anyway it has all worked out and I am so happy that she’ll be at a great place that suits her later this year .  I have triplets going to college in August and we live outside Chicago so it’s goring to be rough but I keep telling myself Tucson is a flight away and a warm place to visit .

Teacher here...I have one graduating dancer this year and she will be attending the University of Arizona. It was her number one choice so I'm very pleased for her. She wanted a program that would allow her to take 'regular' college academic classes and not a conservatory BFA program.

Gender:  Female

Main/Most recent training: (ex. small local school, small company affiliated school, residency, etc. Do not list the program unless you want to): small ballet school in rural area; studies only ballet and modern during school year; no jazz or commercial dance training.

Level of school completed: will be a high school grad spring 2019 regular public HS

Audition method: applied to U of A and accepted academically last Nov with academic scholarship; did dance audition in January and was called 2 days later with invite/acceptance to department

School attending: University of Arizona Dance major

Position process/progress: graduating high school - followed the regular college process with application in the fall and waited to audition in January

Words of wisdom about the process/decisions:  This student did her research into several programs and decided what she wanted out of her college experience. She ended up only going to one audition (U of A) but had several other auditions planned. Because she heard back immediately from the U of A, she canceled the rest of her plans.

Congratulations to your DD  Docdancemom and to your student Temps de Cuisse!!

It's been a stressful and exiting audition process for my DD.

I am excited that my DD committed to attending the Dominican/Lines Ballet BFA program for this fall!

Gender: Female

Main/Most recent training:  She has trained the past 2 years in the pre-professional scholarship program of the junior division of The Ailey School and spent 2 summers in their profession division Summer Intensive. Prior to that she trained at a studio in our small town in Ohio which was ballet focused but did provide classes in jazz, hip-hop and contemporary and modern her last year there.

Level of school completed: high school senior

Audition method: Audition tour in NYC

School attending: Dominican/Lines BFA

Position process/progress: graduating high school

Words of wisdom about the process/decisions:  My DD had researched a lot of programs and thought she would attend one with more of a modern focus.  She did a lot of auditions though, 8 total, and ended up having 5 schools to choose from.   Lines was her top choice after the audition which she was not expecting as it is so different than what she has been doing.  We did a quick visit  and she observed classes and rehearsals which confirmed for her that Lines was her top choice.  She was glad that she did auditions early - from November - January and that she kept an open mind.
