I think this is key & you put it really well. I suppose I see some under-par dancers, who could be expending their time, energy (and class fees!) on improving their basic technique. But they've become fixated on pointe as the ballet thing. 

On the other hand, when I went back on pointe at the suggestion of my teacher in my early 30s (I was on pointe from 14 to 16), I found it did help my overall technique. My turns really improved, as I just had to pull up and up and up!
