now although I am only a freshman i'm already thinking of college (more or less on a money standpoint i have to seriously save up) however i always wanted to be a lawyer now however i'm begining develop a dream for broadway and like most people my age i don't know what I want to do yet. would it be possible to major in law and minor in dance and still (if i choose dance over law) do broadway even though i only minored in it? i know it seems like i'm thinking way over my time but it's just really been on my mind lately. if anyone can help me i'd really appreciate it. to the mods: if you feel this is not appropriate feel free to delete it.

So anything wrong with Performance Law? The remarkable and subtle arguments surrounding the rights to the Martha Graham repertoire and the judge's extensive and precise, even elegant opinion in the case provides even the law laity with a good example of the good uses of the complexities of the law!:) Dancers have retired from performing careers and gone to law school for this specialty, an excellent example of something we've said many times on this board - "You'll always have brains, the body is a more ephemeral entity!";)

Sarah, it's not inappropriate, however I think it's really a YD topic, rather than a BB topic. Okay with you if I move it to YD 13-16?

In answer to your question, I would have to say that I think it's a bit early to be trying to make any decisions, but keeping your options open is always a good idea. One thing to keep in mind in terms of performing for a living, whether it is a ballet company or broadway, opera or the concert hall, these things really take a total committment. It's possible to major in something else in college and still dance, but you have to have the ability to do a lot of things at once. With dance, that is VERY time consuming and makes it really hard to also pursue a difficult academic degree. NOT impossible, just very difficult.

It has been done. My godchild danced all her life, also sang, played the piano and violin, and performed in musicals. In college she majored in Pre-med AND Music, continued to dance and perform in every musical and opera there was, and graduated SUMA Cum Laude in 4 years. She left for NY and has not been out of work since she got there, landing an excellent role in an Andrew Lloyd Weber Review which toured Europe for 3 months, then 2 major starring roles in Summer Stock productions outside of NY, and then a great role in Cabaret, as a Kit Kat Girl and a cover for the leading role of Sally Bowles, which she performed a number of times. Now she is in the new production of Boys From Syracuse.

So, I guess anything is possible! ;)

Sarah, I also have a former student who danced first in a regional company and also on a Cruise Ship for a while. Then she went to college and Law School, and is enjoying a most successful career as a lawyer. She was with a large corporate firm for a while, and has left that to join the Prosecutors office and practice a totally different kind of law. She loves it!
