DFW Dance Groups forced to make cuts

Although the title sounds bad, it sounds more like the companies made sound decisions to stay above board.

Thanks for this. DS has several friends there, and I think he actually envied the one month layoff they had in March. Until I explained that meant they couldn't pay bills. It seems unfortunate to have multiple companies in the same city, though. I know that's probably a contentious comment, but it means multiple companies vying for the same audiences and donor money, both of which are in limited supply at the moment. Especially in an area already filled with lots of student companies. I can't help wondering if this newer company might find more success if it gravitated down towards the Waco area closer to Baylor. Or up to Lubbock or Amarillo. Or even farther north towards Allen, where, at least a few years ago, there was a good bit of suburban growth. To my knowledge there's nothing in those area ballet-wise. And it's too far to drive into Dallas or Ft. Worth. But I could be wrong!

There is definitely room for growth in all of these areas, and Plano/Frisco/Allen still appear to be growing by leaps and bounds.

That's my thought, too. And the growth is so tremendous that getting into Ft. Worth, or even Dallas, for an evening show, especially during the week, is highly problematic even from Plano. We were in North Dallas and it took tremendous mental willpower to drive to Arlington, much less Ft. Worth. Compounded with the price of gas now. I know there are some youth companies in Richardson, Plano, and even Denton, but further north should be a good potential audience. Or even Northeast over towards Garland and Mesquite. I just think it's unfortunate to try and start a company in an area that is already struggling. I'm glad TBT is thinking creatively, though, in addressing their financial situation.

Victoria, thank you so much for sharing these PBS round-table interviews! I find it quite commendable that PBS saw it wise and appropriate to put together a round-table panel discussion on ballet, which in this country, is quite marginalized. Sadly, my viewer experience of PBS has been limited to the Nightly Business Report, and the occassional Masterpiece Theatre. If only we could get more dance-oriented PBS presentations in my city........
