Books: The Lives of the Muses

Recommended Posts

I've read the book and enjoyed it enormously. It's an interesting assortment of muses -- from the tragic Elizabeth Siddal (Dante Gabriel Rossetti) to the self-promoter Yoko Ono. Two of the muses I already knew something about -- Hester Thrale, Samuel Johnson's friend (despite Francine Prose's designation, I don't think she qualifies as a muse), and the ballerina-muse to whom you allude. But I found the other portraits equally fascinating.
