Hey

I don't know if this is supposed to be posted here, but I was wondering whats better to drink during dance class, powerade (or gatorade, or other sport-type drinks) or just plain water? Some people say powerade because it gives you carbs which keeps your energy level up and they quench your thirst better. Or is it just a matter of prefrence?

Thanks

Plain water is best.

Sports drinks are OK when you're severely dehydrated, or short on electrolytes, but in a normal class or rehearsal, I can't imagine that happening to a person with a normal metabolism.

sports drinks have special electrolytes in them. electrolytes are a fancy name for the minerals sodium, potassium and chloride. the main reason why they are added to sports drinks is to keep you thirsty so you'll be more likely to keep drinking and less likely to get dehydrated. however to beware of sports drinks, make sure you read the label becasue some of them contain huge quantities of sugar!

Actually, electrolytes are acids, bases and salts which allow water to become conductive of electricity. You are however, correct in that most sports drinks could be loosely defined as Kool-Aid made with a spoon of table salt (sodium chloride) added. Gatorade uses sodium citrate sometimes, depending on flavor. They also contain potassium salts like potassium phosphate.

hey

Primapink26, you were right about powerade being full of sugar! Half of a bottle has almost as much sugar as a can of pop!! :) I'll have to share that with a few girls from my dance class who drink powerade like it's water!!
