Ok, I just started dancing this year and i started out in basic classes, now i have just got moved up to pre-el! My teacher thinks i'm ready although she said i probably will feel behind for the first couple of weeks. She said i needed to work on my plies, and i was wondering if anyone had any tips or anything to help with plies?!?

That's a kind of all-encompassing question, Lara, but if I know most students, the most common shared flaw in plié is the tendency to let the knees drift forward, which is really a function of rotation of the leg in the hipsocket. Keep the knees on line with the toes, and the hips on line with the knees, and you should avoid damaging yourself.:)

Also Lara, I hope that you have been taught that a plié is an upward, not a downward movement. As you start the plié you must feel like you are going up, even though your knees are bending. Do not stop at the bottom but immediately push downward with the feet to come back up. If you cannot hold the rotation on the way up then try slightly less turn out and make sure that you maintain the lfit in the abs and back.

i also have trouble with movements like eleves and releves, because you have to plie after you go up. this is a problem for me because i have a hard time reaching my heels down to the floor in the plie before going up again. my teacher says this is a very bad habit to have because it will gradually shorten my achilles tendon and it will snap! does anyone have any advice for me?!?

sorry if this doesnt make sense!

Lara, if you have a tight achilles, which would be the reason that you don't put your heels down, then working correctly with your demi plié is the best way to stretch them. Not putting your heels down only makes them tighter. This is not a good idea. USE your demi plié, with the heels on the floor! Your teacher is right, not putting your heels down is a very bad habit :)

And here's a paradox for you along the line of going up to go downward - when you work on demi-plié, one of the most important things to do is NOT to work the muscles which hold your foot in place. In other words, you have to release into the demi-plié in order to get the full travel in the movement!
